CAIR Welcomes ICC Decision to Seek Arrest Warrant for Myanmar Leader Over War Crimes Against Rohingya Muslims

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the International Criminal Court (ICC) decision to seek an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s (Burma) military leader Min Aung Hlaing over alleged crimes against humanity committed against Rohingya Muslims.

Earlier this year, CAIR condemned the reported killing of hundreds of Rohingya Muslims, including women and children, by drone strikes while they were fleeing violence in Myanmar.

In 2022, CAIR welcomed a determination by the Biden administration that violence against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority amounts to genocide and crimes against humanity.

Last week, CAIR applauded the ICC decision to reject outside pressure and issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza genocide.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“Just as we welcomed the recent ICC arrest warrants for Israeli war criminals, we welcome this decision to seek a warrant for the Myanmar leader responsible for past and ongoing crimes against humanity targeting Rohingya Muslims. The international standard for judging anyone engaged in war crimes and genocide must be the same for all nations, with no exceptions for those favored, enabled or excused by our own government.”

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
