CAIR Welcomes U.S. Determination that Myanmar’s Violence Against Rohingya Muslims is Genocide

(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/21/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a determination by the Biden administration that violence against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority amounts to genocide and crimes against humanity.

Last year, CAIR welcomed the inclusion of China and Myanmar in the 2021 U.S. Department of State Report to Congress Pursuant to Section 5 of the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act of 2018 and called for the Biden administration to officially recognize Myanmar’s atrocities against the Rohingya Muslims as a genocide.

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We welcome the Biden administration’s recognition of the genocide perpetrated against Rohingya Muslims. It is long past time for the world to take concrete action to hold Myanmar’s military dictatorship accountable for its ongoing racist and Islamophobic crimes against humanity.”

Mitchell noted that CAIR has previously called for crimes against humanity charges against Myanmar soldiers who confessed to the genocide of Rohingya Muslims.

He said today’s determination highlights the need to pass the Combating International Islamophobia Act (H.R. 5665 / S. 3384), which passed the House in December and is currently awaiting consideration in the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
