(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/2/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a move to remove a Confederate monument from a park in Nashville, Tenn.
Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation Board served public notice Tuesday that it plans to petition the Tennessee Historical Commission for a waiver to remove the sculpture.
“Public spaces should be used to honor those who made our nation a better place, not traitors who sought to maintain slavery and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome this effort to remove a symbol of the racist Confederacy.”
Hooper noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
The American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
