(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/23/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a bill in the South Carolina legislature that would give state employees a floating holiday to replace Confederate Memorial Day.
The Senate Family and Veterans Services Committee voted to create a holiday state employees could take any time they want and would remove Confederate Memorial Day on May 10 from the holiday list. If employees want that day off, they would have to use the floating holiday.

“No one should be forced to celebrate a holiday honoring the traitors and white supremacists of the Confederacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome this bill and all other initiatives to remove remnants of the Confederacy from our society.”
Hooper noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
He noted that CAIR today condemned the repeated white supremacist vandalism of a Black Lives Matter mural in North Carolina.
Hooper added that yesterday, CAIR supported a call by the NAACP to remove a Confederate monument from outside a courthouse in Robeson County, N.C.
The American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
