(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/12/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed plans to rename several streets in Alexandria, Va., which are currently named for Confederate historical figures.
The plan was outlined in a memo sent by Alexandria’s mayor to city council members. According to the plan, a committee would rename three streets annually as part of the city budget. There are 41 streets in Alexandria named for Confederate officials.

“Those traitors who waged war on our nation in order to defend slavery and white supremacy do not deserve to be honored on streets or in any other public spaces,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge Alexandria officials to move forward with this plan and for local officials nationwide to follow their example.”
He noted that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
