(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/20/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the removal of a Confederate memorial from Arlington Cemetery.
The monument was removed today after a ruling by a federal judge. The removal of the statue was recommended by an independent commission in conjunction with a review of Army bases with Confederate names.

“Monuments to those who fought in order to preserve slavery and white supremacy do not belong in a national cemetery honoring those who served our nation,” said CAIR National Communications Manager Ismail Allison. “We welcome the removal of this monument to treason and oppression.”
He noted that CAIR previously welcomed efforts to remove a Confederate monument from Arlington National Cemetery.
