The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed reports that the U.S. plans to withdraw all American troops from Syria and called for an orderly transition of the occupied areas to the liberated Syrian people.
Israeli media reported that “senior White House officials conveyed a message to their Israeli counterparts indicating that President Trump intends to pull thousands of US troops from Syria.”
In a statement, CAIR Director of Government Affairs Department Robert S. McCaw said:
“We welcome reports that our government plans to end the unauthorized presence of U.S. troops in Syria. We urge the Pentagon to coordinate this reported withdrawal with the new Syrian government in an orderly manner so that control of the land is turned over to the Syrian people. It is long past time for U.S. troops in Syria to come home instead of being sitting ducks for attacks or magnets for regional conflict. The Syrian people must decide the future of Syria without foreign occupation.”
Earlier this month, CAIR responded to the Treasury Department’s partial lifting of sanctions on Syria by calling on the U.S. to “fully and immediately” lift all Assad-related sanctions so that the Syrian people can freely rebuild their nation. CAIR said that sanctions targeting former Assad regime personalities, such as officials and business people who had a leading role in supporting the regime’s crimes, should remain in place.
In December, Washington, D.C. based CAIR congratulated the Syrian-American community, the liberated people of Syria, the Muslim world, and everyone who supports justice for all on the fall of the brutal Assad dictatorship.
Since then, CAIR has also condemned Israel’s invasion, ethnic cleansing and bombing of Syrian territory.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
