The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the resignation of a Brookfield, Wisconsin, alderman following reports he posted violent anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant comments online.
Those posts by Alderman Kris Seals reportedly included referencing shooting Muslims with “Bacon rapped [sic] bullets.” Another post reportedly stated: “It’s time to wipe out the immigrants from Britain and all of the EU.” There was also reportedly a post on his page about hanging former President Barack Obama.
Last week, CAIR called for Seals’ resignation, citing the dangerous and dehumanizing nature of the comments and their incompatibility with public office.
In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw said:
“We welcome this resignation as a necessary step toward accountability and reaffirm the importance of public officials rejecting violent hate in all its forms. This goes for members of Congress and other national figures who are actively promoting the expulsion and even destruction of American Muslims. The majority of Americans who reject such bigotry must demand better from policymakers at the local and national level.”
According to CAIR’s most recent civil rights report, complaints of anti-Muslim bias and discrimination have continued to rise nationwide, reflecting an ongoing pattern of Islamophobia impacting communities across the country.
