CAIR Welcomes South Carolina University’s Action Against Faculty Member Allegedly Tied to White Supremacist Groups

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/3/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed actions by South Carolina’s Furman University in response to reports that a faculty member allegedly participated in the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., and associated with organizations connected with white supremacist groups.

In a letter, Furman’s President Elizabeth Davis wrote in part: “I and others immediately began investigating this information. As we continue to look into this matter, this professor will not teach or be on campus as we process these difficult circumstances and determine next steps.”

“We welcome the swift action of university officials, which sends the clear message that the systemic anti-Black racism promoted by white supremacist groups will not be tolerated on their campus,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
