(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/21/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed U.S. endorsement of a UN Security Council Statement opposing the illegal expansion of Israeli settlements, but reiterated its call on the Biden administration to take concrete action to against the far-right Israeli government’s escalating human rights abuses.
In the statement, the Security Council expressed its “deep concern and dismay” over the Israeli government’s plans to build 10,000 settlements and legalize 9 existing settlements in the West Bank.
“We strongly oppose Israel’s announcement that it will advance thousands of settlement units,” US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said. “And we strongly oppose Israel’s announcement that it will begin a process to retroactively legalize nine outposts in the West Bank that were previously illegal under Israeli law.”

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“Although we welcome the Biden administration’s support for the UN Security Council statement, non-binding statements of condemnation are not enough to deter Benjamin Netanyahu’s racist government. The Biden administration must take concrete action, including conditions on aid, to stop the Israeli apartheid government’s increasingly out-of-control human rights abuses.”
