CAIR Welcomes UN Special Rapporteur’s Report Recognizing Israeli Policies as Apartheid

(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/24/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a report by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) recognizing the Israeli government’s policies as apartheid.

The report found that the Israeli government “differentiates its distribution of rights and benefits on the basis of national and ethnic identity, and which ensures the supremacy of one group over, and to the detriment of, the other.”

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We welcome the UN Special Rapporteur’s detailed, thorough, fact-based report. More and more human rights organizations and experts are documenting the fact that the Israeli government’s racist system of oppression against Palestinians meets the definition of apartheid. It is now time for our nation to recognize the obvious and stop funding human rights abuses against the Palestinian people.”

Mitchell noted last month, CAIR welcomed a landmark report by Amnesty International detailing the Israeli government’s decades-long human rights abuses against the Palestinian people in both the Occupied Territories and Israel itself as a system of apartheid.

Last year, CAIR called on Congress to support “Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act,” H.R. 2590, following the release of a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report accusing the Israeli government of committing crimes of apartheid and persecution against Palestinians.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
