(WASHINGTON D.C., 1/13/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s overturning of 58 historical racist legal opinions.
The legal opinions overturned by Attorney General Herring were issued between 1904 and 1967 and upheld state laws enforcing segregation in schools, banning interracial marriage, and disenfranchising Black voters through poll taxes and literacy tests.

“We welcome Attorney General Herring’s decision to overturn these racist legal opinions and urge state and local governments nationwide to remove all similar remnants of white supremacy and systemic anti-Black racism,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
