National Muslim Groups Urge Public Support for Asim Ghafoor’s Legal Fund

American civil rights attorney unjustly detained in United Arab Emirates

(WASHINGTON D.C., 8/3/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and the United States Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), the nation’s largest Muslim civil society umbrella organization, today urged members of the public to support a legal fund for Asim Ghafoor, an American civil rights attorney and human rights activist unjustly arrested and detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ghafoor, who was the attorney of murdered Washington Post writer and dissident Jamal Khashoggi, was arrested on July 14 in Dubai airport while transiting to Istanbul to attend a family wedding. He has been sentenced to three years in prison on charges he had no knowledge of. There is widespread evidence that Ghafoor’s arrest was politically motivated.

CAIR and USCMO are asking members of the public to donate to Ghafoor’s legal fund to help his lawyers challenge the unjust sentence. To donate, either write a check payable to Gill Law Firm Attorney Trust Account (20368 Via Medici Porter Ranch, CA, 21326,) or donate to the Launchgood.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“Asim Ghafoor is a father, a pioneer of civic engagement, a community activist, and a civil rights attorney who helped so many innocent individuals and organizations who were targeted unjustly after 9/11. He deserves our support. We know the American Muslim community and the broader American public can be counted on to stand up for justice. We urge all members of the public who can do so to support Asim’s legal fund and support the fight for his freedom.”

He noted that as of July 28, Ghafoor is reported to have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 complications.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
