(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/10/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the apparently racist targeting of Native players during a high school basketball game in Alaska.
Ketchikan’s school district is investigating allegations that some high school students dressed up as cowboys – including cowboy hats, cowboy boots and flannel shirts – during the game against rivals from Alaska’s only Native reservation.

“Sports should be about competition and respect for the other team, not about the resurfacing of hurtful and inappropriate stereotypes,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “School officials should take appropriate action and institute or update policies and instruction on preventing such disturbing incidents.”
Hooper said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
