(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/28/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed an investigation by a UN commission of inquiry into the Israeli government’s system of apartheid against Palestinians.
The UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory said Thursday it will investigate charges of apartheid against the Israeli government. The commission released its second report last week, which urged the UN Security Council to end Israel’s “permanent occupation” and urged UN member states to prosecute Israeli officials. On Thursday, the commission’s three members said future reports will investigate apartheid by the Israeli government.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell:
“Respected human rights groups inside and outside of Israel have recognized that the Israeli government is perpetrating a violent and racist system of apartheid against the Palestinian people. It is long past time for the UN to do the same. We welcome this investigation, which should lead to international action to end the Israeli apartheid government’s human rights abuses.”
He noted that earlier this month, CAIR called on the Biden administration to condemn provocations by Israeli settlers targeting Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem and the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron.

Mitchell added that Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Presbyterian Church USA have recently labeled Israel an apartheid state.
The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing also recognized that Israel is committing apartheid against Palestinians.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
