CAIR Condemns Alleged Threats Targeting Maine City Councilor for Condemning Racist Banner

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/7/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned alleged threats targeting a Portland, Maine city councilor after she condemned the display of a racist banner.

Portland City Councilor Victoria Pelletier took to social media last week to condemn the display of a racist sign in a city park. Following her post, Pelletier reportedly received numerous threats, including death threats. At Monday night’s council meeting, every councilor spoke in support of Pelletier and denounced the threats.

He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
