The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to remove Darren Beattie as Acting Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs due to openly white supremacist views he has expressed.
Beattie’s record of racist and white supremacist rhetoric includes recently tweeting, “Competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work.” He was previously fired from the Trump administration in 2018 for attending a conference featuring white nationalists. In addition, he has repeatedly attacked Black leaders and public figures, demanding they “bow” to MAGA.
In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw said:
“We call on Secretary Rubio to fire the open white supremacist Darren Beattie, who just a few months ago declared that only ‘competent white men must be in charge if you want to work.’ It boggles the mind that Secretary Rubio–our first Hispanic Secretary of State–would employ a man who believes that Secretary Rubio is unfit to serve. President Trump was right to fire Mr. Beattie last time around, and Secretary Rubio should fire him now.”
CAIR is calling on the Trump administration and State Department to immediately remove Beattie from his appointment and reaffirm its commitment to promoting the equal treatment of all people.
Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
