The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CO), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a planned declaration by the city council in Boulder, Colorado, condemning anti-Muslim hate.
The “Declaration Condemning Muslim Hate and Recognizing the Contributions, Rights, and Safety of Muslim Communities in Boulder” is scheduled to be presented at the Jan. 20 city council meeting.
“We welcome this recognition of the contributions of the Muslim community to our society and the acknowledgement of growing anti-Muslim hate that often leads to acts of discrimination and even violence targeting Muslims, Arab-Americans and anyone perceived to be members of those communities,” said CAIR-CO Board Chair Krista Cole. “We urge cities nationwide to adopt similar declarations of solidarity with the Muslim and other minority communities.”
Cole added that just this week, CAIR’s Florida chapter condemned a “Death to the Arabs” post by an Israeli tourist in Florida who was reportedly shot in Miami Beach because the alleged pro-Israel attacker thought he was “Palestinian.”
She noted that between January to June 2024, CAIR documented 4,951 incoming bias complaints nationwide, a 69 percent increase over the same period in 2023.
Last year, CAIR’s national office released its 2024 civil rights report, which revealed the highest number of complaints it has ever received in its 30-year history. Titled “Fatal: The Resurgence of Anti-Muslim Hate,” the report documented 8,061 complaints. Nearly half of all complaints received in 2023 were reported in the final three months of the year.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
