The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Congress to block more than $6.5 billion in new arms sales to Israel for its ongoing genocide being pushed by the Trump administration without congressional oversight.
House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Gregory Meeks criticized Secretary of State Marco Rubio for providing no documentation to justify bypassing the congressional review process to send Israel four weapons systems, including Apache attack helicopters and combat land vehicles.
In a statement, Washington, D.C.–based CAIR said:
“Congress must not allow the executive branch to unilaterally funnel billions of dollars in weapons to a foreign government committing genocide. Bypassing congressional oversight to arm Israel makes the United States complicit in mass atrocities against Palestinian civilians. Lawmakers have both the authority and the moral obligation to block these arms sales and uphold U.S. and international law.”
CAIR called on members of Congress from both parties to exercise their constitutional oversight responsibilities, reject the proposed arms transfers and demand accountability for the use of U.S. weapons in violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
The civil rights organization has repeatedly called for the U.S. and other governments to halt military support that enables genocide.
Over the weekend, CAIR said Israeli attacks in Gaza that reportedly murdered some 30 people, including a number of children, once again show that the soc-called “ceasefire” is a myth that Israel uses to continue its genocide and ethnic cleansing.
