Islamophobic incidents have risen tremendously in the last few years, according to CAIR data and other studies. The Muslim advocacy organization received 8,683 complaints in 2025, the highest number of complaints in a year since it started tracking in 1996. The previous record was in 2024.

The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations posted an open letter on Facebook. It noted that the stadium is owned by the city and sits on public land. The letter said taxpayers helped build it and the public has a right to know how power is used there.

Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks orchestrated by al-Qaeda, Islamophobia has become “as American as apple pie,” said Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim American civil rights organization.
In some respects, he said, prejudice is worse today than during the early 2000s. CAIR Michigan has seen a steady rise in self-reported incidents of Islamophobia in the state — surpassing the number in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

Attorneys from the Council on American-Islamic Relations Legal Defense Fund and Tulsa-based Laizure Law are representing the Islamic Society. Meghan Murphy, a CAIR staff attorney, said in August Broken Arrow imposed “uniquely high engineering and evidentiary standards” on the mosque application that were not held to other institutions, including nearby churches.
