ACTION ALERT: CAIR Calls on Congress to Reject Trump’s New Low Refugee Resettlement Cap

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/18/18) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Congress to reject the Trump administration’s attempt to dismantle the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) by setting a historically-low refugee cap of 30,000, the lowest level of admissions since the program began in 1980.

During his first year in office, President Trump capped the number of refugees at a then historically-low 45,000, down from the 110,000 cap that President Barack Obama set before leaving office. There is currently a backlog of 320,000 asylum seekers awaiting a decision on whether they will be allowed to remain in the United States.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the administration plans to set the new admissions goal at 30,000 refugees for Fiscal Year 2019.

The Trump administration’s decision to cut USRAP admissions is an affront to the long-standing American tradition of providing a home for refugees. Not only is this decision a significant break from tradition, but it is also a continuation of Trump’s racist and xenophobic agenda to target vulnerable communities that his driven many of his policies, including the Muslim ban and the practice of separating families at the border.

Later today, CAIR will co-sponsor a rally to protest the lowest refugee admissions number in history.

In a statement, CAIR Director of Government Affairs Robert McCaw said:

“We should not close our nation to those who seek the same protection and freedom sought by previous generations of refugees.

“This new policy is not only inhumane — as it targets the most desperate and vulnerable people in the world — but it is also a reflection of the heartlessness, racism and xenophobia that seems to drive many of the Trump administration’s policies.

“It is now up to the people and Congress to demand that that our nation restores its commitment to those ”˜yearning to breathe free.’”
