(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/5/18) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today joined a coalition of 24 local and national organizations calling on all Americans to remind Congress that it still has the power to repeal President Trump’s “Muslim Ban” executive order and should do so immediately.
President Trump and the U.S. Supreme Court may allow policies that discriminate against people based on how they worship or where they come from, but Congress has the legislative authority to overturn the Muslim Ban.
Specifically, the coalition is urging Congress to support and co-sponsor the two following acts:
- H.R.4271 – To block the implementation of certain presidential actions that restrict individuals from certain countries from entering the United States.
- S.1979 – A bill to block the implementation of certain presidential actions that restrict individuals from certain countries from entering the United States.
Sponsored by Representative Judy Chu (D-CA) and Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT), these bills would declare the Muslim Ban executive order illegal and unconstitutional and prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to implement it.
By signing the petition, the following message will be sent to members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate:
“Now that the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Trump’s racist Muslim Ban to go forward, it’s time for Congress to act and #RepealTheBan. We call on you to support H.R. 4271 and S. 1979, bills that would declare the Ban illegal and unconstitutional, and prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to implement it.”
The Supreme Court’s June decision upholding the Muslim Ban will forever stain our history and the legacy of the court””alongside cases like Dred Scott, which upheld slavery, and Korematsu, which permitted the incarceration of Japanese-Americans. In doing so, it gave the green light to an administration that has made xenophobia, racism, and anti-Muslim bigotry its official policy.
From the Muslim Ban to policies like locking immigrant children and their parents in cages, Trump’s agenda is rooted in White Supremacy. He consistently endorses dangerous policies to harm, dehumanize, and exclude people of color.
Every day that Congress fails to act, the ban continues to block people from five Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. Those impacted are separated from their loved ones, denied educational and professional opportunities, lifesaving medical treatment, and family milestones. This policy is based on nothing other than Trump’s bigoted campaign promise to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.
