(PHOENIX, AZ, 12/8/2021) – The Arizona office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the official recognition of four Confederate groups and the exclusion of Native American WWII veterans at an event at the state capitol to mark the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

“It is unacceptable that groups whitewashing the racist and traitorous legacy of the Confederacy be recognized at an event honoring those who fought to save our nation from destruction,” said CAIR-Arizona Executive Director Azza Abuseif. “The Native American ‘code talkers’ who defended America – despite a history of discrimination and displacement – are the one who should have been honored and recognized.”
Abuseif added that Washington, D.C. based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate flags, statues and symbols from public spaces nationwide.
