(SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 9/27/17) – Today, the Trump Administration announced its decision to lower the number of refugees it would admit into the United States to 45,000, the lowest number in almost four decades. The new level of refugee admissions is less than half the number the former Administration said should be admitted in the 2017 fiscal year.
This announcement comes shortly after the Supreme Courtcancelled oral arguments in the Muslim Ban cases, and after media reports show that a draft study by DHS found that refugees brought in $63 billion more in government revenues over the past decade than they cost was suppressed by the Trump White House.
In opposition to this action, Gadeir Abbas, CAIR National Senior Litigation Attorney, Elica Vafaie, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and Avideh Moussavian, Senior Policy Attorney at the National Immigration Law Center, released the following statements:
Gadeir Abbas, CAIR National Senior Litigation Attorney:
“President Trump has put the lives of refugees who need our help at risk by drastically reducing the number the US will accept. These drastic measures are completely unnecessary, because according to national security experts, our refugee program’s current vetting process is already extremely effective in identifying and mitigating threats to our national security. Reducing the numbers of refugees is nothing short of a back-door Muslim Ban.”
Elica Vafaie, Staff Attorney at Asian Americans Advancing Justice:
“The US is and has always been a shining beacon welcoming persons fleeing persecution in other countries on account of their race, religion, nationality, and political opinion. By slashing our refugee resettlement program to historic lows, President Trump is abusing executive power to change the very fabric and face of our American story.”
Avideh Moussavian, Senior Policy Attorney at the National Immigration Law Center:
“The drastic reduction in the number of refugees by the Trump Administration shamefully puts lives at risk and is using public policy to discriminate against Muslims in our country.”
