CAIR-Austin Welcomes School District’s Revival of Talks to Remove Confederate School Names

(AUSTIN, TEXAS, 2/12/2018) — The Austin chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Austin) today commended the Austin Independent School District (AISD) School Board for renewing discussions on renaming five Austin-area campuses that bear the names of Confederate figures.

The AISD School Board will reconsider the names of the Allan Facility, Reagan High School, the Johnston campus of Eastside Memorial High School, Lanier High School and Fulmore Middle School, which bear the names of individuals that either served as leaders in the Confederate army or were Austinites that fought for the Confederacy.

This discussion will also include potential criteria for school naming policies that incorporate prejudice, discrimination and bias as factors for disqualification. AISD will also provide opportunities for community engagement forums on the possible name changes.

“We thank the AISD School Board for reopening this important discussion and hope it leads to the removal of any school names that honor those who led or fought for the Confederacy and the injustice it represented,” said CAIR-Austin Executive Director Maira Sheikh. “We hope that these public institutions will be renamed in honor of those that fought for greater equality, inclusion and tolerance in our nation.”

In the past, CAIR has called Americans of all faiths and backgrounds to contact their state legislatures to request the introduction of CAIR’s template resolution calling for the removal of all Confederate symbols.
