Passed yesterday, March 2, SCR 125 recognizes Ramadan as a vital time for fasting, spiritual renewal, and community building. The measure further honors the profound contributions of American Muslims to California’s economic, scientific, social, and cultural fabric.
In a statement, CAIR-CA Legislative and Government Affairs Director Oussama Mokeddem said:
“The passage of SCR 125 is a significant milestone for California’s Muslim community. By formally recognizing Ramadan, the State Senate acknowledges not only our faith traditions but the deep-rooted history and tireless contributions of Muslims to this state. We are proud to stand in unity with our legislators to celebrate a California that values religious diversity and pluralism.”
CAIR-CA extends its deepest gratitude to Senator Wahab and the 13 legislative coauthors who championed this measure. Their leadership ensures that the voices and heritage of the Muslim community are honored in the halls of government.
The observance of Ramadan began at dusk on February 17, 2026. As Muslims across the globe engage in fasting from sunrise to sunset, SCR 125 serves as a powerful gesture of inclusion and respect for the spiritual renewal of millions.
CAIR-CA staff and community leaders joined Senator Wahab at the State Capitol to witness this significant recognition, marking a continued commitment to justice and fair inclusion for all Californians.
CAIR-CA is a chapter of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
