CAIR-SFBA HOSTS YOUTH LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP, LAUNCHES YOUTH CLUB
(SANTA CLARA, CA, 6/20/07) – On Saturday, June 16, the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) held its second Youth Leadership Workshop of 2007, titled “Framing the Media Message,” at the South Bay Islamic Association (SBIA) in San Jose, Calif.
Organized in coordination with the SBIA Media Committee and the Muslim Community Association Youth Committee, the workshop offered sessions on the use of framing in the media, language and psychology, the use of propaganda, and practical tips for media interviews. The program concluded with a screening of a Bill Moyers interview with Jon Stewart and a discussion of comedy as a framing tool.
Workshop participants visited the studios of World Business and Technology Television (WBT-TV), a grass-roots Muslim initiative, where they conducted on-camera interviews and learned about the technical aspects of television production.
At the workshop, CAIR-SFBA also announced the launch of its Youth Leadership Club for the purpose of keeping the youth engaged in civic action.
“In the current political and social climate, Muslim youth sometimes feel marginalized, leading to a sense of frustration. Our workshops serve as a way for young people to voice their concerns and to work constructively within the system to further justice and understanding,” said Safaa Ibrahim, CAIR-SFBA Executive Director. “We’re taking this a step further by launching a club that meets regularly to address contemporary issues.”
The first club meeting will be on Saturday, July 14. Students are also encouraged to apply for the CAIR-CA Muslim Youth Leadership Conference to be held in Sacramento from August 16-19.
CAIR, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 33 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
