(WASHINGTON D.C., 11/3/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for a hate crime investigation into racist vandalism in Chesterfield, Va. CAIR also welcomed the arrest of a suspect in an anti-Asian hate crime in Wisconsin.
On Tuesday, residents of the predominantly Black Silverleaf townhome community in Chesterfield, Va., discovered racist vandalism on a newly paved sidewalk. While the sidewalk was still wet, someone wrote the words “I hate n*****.” The perpetrator also seemingly dragged their feet through the pavement. Replacing the sidewalk is estimated to cost more than the $13-15,000 it cost to pave it. Chesterfield police are investigating the incident and have asked anyone with information to contact Chesterfield Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.

“The disturbing rise in hate crimes and racist incidents nationwide threatens minority communities, endangers our national unity and projects a negative image of our nation worldwide,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We welcome all efforts by law enforcement authorities and political leaders to combat violent racism and bigotry.”
Allison noted that CAIR condemned another anti-Asian attack on the University of Wisconsin’s campus at the beginning of last month.
