(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/13/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for a policy update following an incident in which players on a high school girls volleyball team were targeted with racist chants and gestures at a game in Indiana.
Parents of Black athletes on Pike High School’s girls’ volleyball team are calling for action to be taken after a player on the New Palestine team made racist monkey gestures at them during a game on Saturday. Following the incident, New Palestine High School said the student involved had been disciplined, but the school would not share details.

“Racist harassment targeting students cannot be tolerated under any circumstances and should result in policy updates to address the issue,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge New Palestine High School to commit to a no-tolerance policy on such behavior and to ensure students and staff are educated on the societal harms of racism and white supremacy.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
