CAIR Calls for Resignation of Arkansas Sheriff Who Admits Using N-Word ‘Occasionally’

(WASHINGTON, DC., 4/13/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for the resignation of an Arkansas sheriff who admits he “occasionally” uses the racist N-word.

In an interview about allegations of his use of racist language, Prairie County Sheriff Rick Hickman said: “It is what it is. Everybody does it. I don’t use the N word a lot, but occasionally I might have said it.” Hickman says he is not a racist.

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:

“Someone who admits to using racist slurs is clearly unfit to protect and serve a diverse population. We urge Sheriff Hickman to resign and instead pursue a career that does not impact the lives of minority communities.”

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
