(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/11/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the North Dakota state legislature to drop a bill that would ban anti-racism teaching in K-12 schools.
The North Dakota House measure – passed by a vote of 76 to 16 — would ban the teaching of so-called critical race theory (CRT), which the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction says is not taught in state schools. The bill now goes to the state Senate.

According to the American Bar Association, “CRT recognizes that racism is not a bygone relic of the past. Instead, it acknowledges that the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the imposition of second-class citizenship on Black Americans and other people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation.”

“The false claim that critical race theory is being taught in our nation’s schools may make for useful political fodder, but it spreads confusion and misinformation that will inevitably prevent young people from learning about how racism and bigotry negatively impact their lives and our society,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that CAIR has condemned similar efforts to ban anti-racism teaching in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, New Hampshire, and other states.

Hooper said the American Muslim community and CAIR are standing in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
