(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/28/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Wisconsin state legislature to drop a proposed bill that would ban anti-racism teaching in schools.
Under the legislation under consideration today, Wisconsin school officials would be barred from teaching students and staff about systemic racism under the guise of banning so-called Critical Race Theory (CRT), is not mentioned in the bill but is the basis of similar legislation nationwide. CAIR had previously condemned the legislation.

According to the American Bar Association, “CRT recognizes that racism is not a bygone relic of the past. Instead, it acknowledges that the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the imposition of second-class citizenship on Black Americans and other people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation.”

“This nationwide effort to prevent young people from learning about and addressing systemic anti-Black racism and white supremacy can only harm our nation’s future as a just and inclusive society,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that CAIR has condemned similar efforts to ban anti-racism teaching in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, New Hampshire, and other states.
