(WASHINGTON D.C., 9/6/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Arkansas Historical Commission to approve a request to remove a Confederate flag display in Fort Smith.
This week, the commission will review its first historical preservation waiver request since the Arkansas State Capitol and Historical Monument Protection Act was passed. The request comes from Fort Smith, where a Confederate flag has been flown since 2001 as part of a historical display. Under the Arkansas State Capitol and Historical Monument Protection Act, it is illegal to remove or rename a public monument.

“We urge the Arkansas Historical Commission to grant Fort Smith’s request to stop displaying a Confederate flag, which symbolizes treason, white supremacy, and slavery,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “Every community should have the right to rid themselves of symbols of hate.”
CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
