CAIR Welcomes South Carolina County’s Rescinding of Plan to Install Confederate Statue

(WASHINGTON D.C., 8/18/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the decision of a South Carolina county to rescind its plan to install a monument to a Confederate general.

The Florence County Council unanimously rescinded its vote to put a statue of Confederate General William H. Harllee and his daughter on public property. The council received backlash from the NAACP after it announced plans to place the statue in front of the Florence County Library last month.

“We welcome the decision by the Florence County Council to end the plan to install this statue,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Monuments honoring those who defended white supremacy, slavery and treason do not belong in public spaces.”

He noted that CAIR previously condemned the initial decision to install the statue.
