(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/4/17) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on President Trump to fulfill his promise to establish “safe zones” to protect Syrian civilians following a deadly gas attack apparently carried out by that nation’s dictatorial regime.
Dozens of civilians, including many children, were killed and many more were injured as a result of asphyxiation caused by an unknown gas or chemical agent in northern Syria.

In a statement, CAIR said:
“In the wake of this latest deadly attack on civilians by the brutal Assad regime and its allies, the United States must join with the international community in establishing safe zones for protect those seeking safety and freedom from oppression.
“President Trump promised voters that he would establish such safe zones. Now is the time for him to fulfill his promise. Instead of acquiescing to the actions of a regime that murders and tortures its own people, we must help the Syrian people replace that regime with a representative government that ensures freedom and democracy.
“This attack is not only a crime against the Syrian people, it is a crime against humanity. It would be shameful if chemical attacks on civilians become the norm and do not result in severe consequences for the perpetrators.”
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
