(DENVER, CO, 12/14/2021) – The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Colorado) today welcomed efforts to rename landmarks with names connected to racism, white supremacy and the genocide of Indigenous people.
The Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board (CGNAB), consisting of 15 members from diverse backgrounds, has motioned to change the names of three major Colorado landmarks and submitted requests to the state’s governor for approval. Soon, the CGNAB will discuss renaming major landmarks such as Mt. Evans, named for the state’s second governor who gave permission to white settlers to use violence against Indigenous people.

In a statement, CAIR-Colorado Board Chair Krista Cole said:
“Geographical landmarks are some of the most important features of our state. It is unacceptable when the names of those landmarks are in contrast with our values. We welcome and support all efforts to remove names that are derogatory to Indigenous and minority communities.”
Cole said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry.
