CAIR Condemns Death of Palestinian Baby from Israel-Imposed Starvation, Israeli Torture of Gaza Doctor

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/25/2024) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned both the death of a Palestinian baby from starvation intentionally imposed by Israel’s far-right government and the Israeli torture of a Palestinian doctor in Gaza.

Mahmoud Fattouh died at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Video shows the emaciated infant gasping for breath. A paramedic says in the video. “The baby has not been fed any milk for days, as baby milk is totally absent in Gaza.”

The head of Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza says that there is a steep rise in malnutrition cases among children, especially newborns. A Canadian doctor who went to Gaza has said that she and her colleagues, “witnessed crimes against humanity together, saw small children dying of hunger, bombs, sniper shots.”

Aerial photos show more than 2,000 aid trucks on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing where they are being blocked by Israel from entering Gaza.

Palestinian Doctor Ahmed Abu Sobha, who was detained at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis in Gaza reports he was ordered to strip, blindfolded, beaten, marked with an “X,” had glass bottles smashed on his head, sprayed with freezing water, and had his arm broken by a Israeli soldier during a beating.

Israel has already killed almost 30,000 people, mainly women and children, in Gaza.

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:

“The daily war crimes committed by the forces of the far-right Israeli government are so common that Western media have largely stopped reporting on them. We must never become numb to the ongoing Israeli genocide, forced starvation and ethnic cleansing that the Palestinian people are experiencing and which the Biden administration is enabling.”

On Friday, CAIR called on the Biden administration to repudiate the Israeli government’s post-war plan for the de facto annexation of Gaza.

Last week, CAIR called on the Biden administration to condemn comments made by Israeli Minister of Social Equality & Women’s Advancement May Golan in which she said she is “personally proud of the ruins of Gaza, and that every baby, even 80 years from now, will tell their grandchildren what the Jews did.”

CAIR recently called on House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic leader Hakim Jefferies to publicly repudiate Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN) and to issue a formal censure for his recent statement that “We should kill them all” in reference to Palestinian children in Gaza.

CAIR also called on the Biden administration to address reported sexual violence, arbitrary detention and abuse by the forces of the far-right Israeli government targeting Palestinian women and girls.
