CAIR Condemns Distribution of Anti-Semitic Pamphlets in Maryland as Symptom of ‘Empowered’ Bigotry

(BALTIMORE, MD, 7/5/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the distribution of anti-Semitic pamphlets in Laurel, Md., as a symptom of “empowered” bigotry nationwide.

Residents in several neighborhoods reported finding the pamphlets and local police have launched a hate crime investigation.

“These hate-filled anti-Semitic screeds are another manifestation of the empowerment of bigotry we have witnessed in recent months and years,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry. “When those in high office promote White supremacist and racist views and policies, it sends the message that bigotry is a legitimate point of view and that minority communities may be targeted with impunity.”

Earlier this week, CAIR called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for incidents targeting an Iraqi refugee family in Dundalk, Md.

CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

The Washington-based organization’s recently-released 2018 Civil Rights Report, “Targeted,” showed a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents against American Muslims from 2016 to 2017, and a 15 percent increase in the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes in that same time period.

Community members are being urged to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR’s Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by going to:
