(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/22/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a racist sign targeting the Juneteenth national holiday put up in the window of a Maine business.
An insurance agency in Millinocket, Maine, displayed the racist sign, which stated: “Juneteenth ~it’s whatever… We’re closed. Enjoy your fried chicken & collard greens.” The sign was later taken down.

“Juneteenth should offer an opportunity to celebrate freedom and inclusivity in our nation, not to promote racism and division,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw.
He noted that on Sunday, CAIR condemned a protest by a white supremacist group targeting a Juneteenth celebration in Tennessee.
McCaw said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
