CAIR-CT Supports New Haven’s Lawsuit Against Trump Admin’s Attacks on Sanctuary Cities

The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said it stands in full support of New Haven’s leadership in its legal challenge to Trump’s administration and supports the city in its decision to officially join a multi-jurisdictional lawsuit against the Trump administration over executive orders targeting sanctuary cities.

The lawsuit is led by the City and County of San Francisco and Santa Clara County. Other plaintiffs include King County, Washington, and the City of Portland, Oregon, with additional jurisdictions expected to join in the coming weeks.

New Haven receives approximately $6.4 million in federal funding from the Department of Justice, supporting vital initiatives such as violence prevention programs, police training, and mental health services. The Trump administration’s policies threaten these critical resources, disproportionately harming vulnerable communities.

In a statement, CAIR-CT chairman Farhan Memon said:

“CAIR-CT supports Mayor Justin Elicker decision that these federal actions are unlawful and violate fundamental constitutional principles, including the 10th Amendment, separation of powers, the Spending Clause, Due Process Clause, and the Administrative Procedures Act.

“We call on all Connecticut cities to take similar action. Sanctuary city policies are essential in ensuring the safety and dignity of all residents, including immigrants and marginalized communities.

“The Trump administration’s attacks on sanctuary cities are not just legally flawed – they are a direct assault on civil rights and the values of inclusion that define our communities.

“We urge other Connecticut cities, including Hartford, Bridgeport, and Waterbury to follow New Haven’s lead and join the fight against these unconstitutional actions.

“Despite criticism from some political figures, including Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto, who accused Mayor Elicker of fear-mongering, CAIR-CT emphasizes that sanctuary policies enhance public safety by fostering trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement.”

He added that CAIR-CT remains committed to defending the rights of all Connecticut residents and will continue to advocate for policies that uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
