The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed solidarity with the Muslim community in Scotland after a mosque was targeted with hate graffiti.
According to media reports, offensive graffiti was discovered on Edinburgh Central Mosque, alarming worshippers and prompting condemnation from community members and local leaders. The incident is being treated as a hate crime.
In a statement, Washington, D.C.-based CAIR said:
“We stand in full solidarity with the Muslim community in Scotland following this disturbing act of hate targeting a house of worship. Attacks on mosques and other religious institutions are an attack on the basic principles of religious freedom, safety and human dignity. We commend local residents who have spoken out against this bigotry and urge law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.”
Earlier this month, CAIR expressed solidarity with the Muslim community in Australia following a reported hate attack on an Imam (religious leader) and his wife.
Last year, CAIR express similar solidarity with Muslims in Scotland and the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Ireland after hate incidents targeting those communities.
Also last year, CAIR said that Islamophobia is “spinning out of control” in Europe.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
