(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/5/2017) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today announced that it has filed a federal lawsuit against U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on behalf of an Albanian-American Muslim CBP officer in Michigan.

The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
During 2015, Dimitri Qafko was intimidated, harassed and threatened by Internal Affairs in an attempt to coerce him to become an informant by infiltrating Albanian and Iraqi gangs and smugglers. When Qafko refused to cooperate because of fear for his safety and that of his family, Internal Affairs made good on their threats by falsifying documents to levy charges against him and by issuing a proposal to terminate his employment. He was immediately relieved of his firearm and placed on restrictive administrative duties for the next six months. Additionally, he has since been denied 26 promotions that he is both qualified and eligible for.
“Mr. Qafko is one of many American Muslims who have been intimidated, harassed and threatened by the federal government in an attempt to coerce them into becoming informants,” said CAIR National Litigation Director Lena Masri. “Through this lawsuit, we are challenging this unlawful and long-standing practice.”
