(MIAMI, FL, 11/30/07) – The South Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFL) today announced that a Florida man who had been trapped in the Gaza Strip for nearly eight months returned last night to his family in Boca Raton.
Hafez Almbasher, a permanent resident of the United States, had traveled to Gaza to care for his ailing mother nearly eight months ago. When he attempted to return, Israeli authorities blocked his exit from Gaza.
Mr. Almbasher’s wife, Deborah, contacted CAIR-SFL in September for help. Since then, CAIR-SFL has worked with the US State Department and the office of Fla. Rep. Alcee Hastings to help bring back Mr. Almbasher.
“We are grateful for Mr. Almbasher’s safe return to his family and for the work of Rep. Alcee and the U.S. Government in helping to facilitate his return,” said CAIR-SFL Executive Director Altaf Ali.
CAIR, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties and advocacy group, has 33 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
