CAIR Human Rights Complaint Against New Mexico Store’s Islamophobic Signs Successfully Resolved

CAIR Complaint02(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/1/2018) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today announced the successful resolution of a human rights complaint against a New Mexico convenience store that put up Islamophobic and racist signs.

In December of last year, the CAIR Legal Defense Fund filed a human rights complaint against Mayhill Convenience Store after an American Muslim woman reported she was too afraid to enter the establishment because of the derogatory signage at the store.

After CAIR filed its compliant, the store owner removed all offensive signage and sent a letter to CAIR seeking forgiveness for his actions.

CAIR has now independently confirmed that all derogatory signage has been removed.  Gorence & Oliveros, P.C. is co-counsel in the case.

“We commend the store owner for recognizing that the signage at his store was discriminatory and for taking the initiative to remove the signs. It is important that we stay vigilant and not allow discrimination that the civil rights movement sought to eliminate to resurface in the form of Islamophobia, especially as our president continues to implement and normalize anti-Muslim policies,” said CAIR National Litigation Director Lena Masri. “CAIR will always be at the frontlines defending the civil rights and liberties of American Muslims and other disenfranchised groups.”

Because the store owner has removed all discriminatory signage, CAIR has withdrawn its human rights complaint against Mayhill Convenience Store.

Signs posted on the windows of Mayhill Convenience Store included one that stated in bold lettering: “Obama & other Muslims Not welcome here.” The sign included a depiction of a Muslim man praying and a mosque. Several other signs contained racist and bigoted language, including the following:

  • “We don’t like Obama’s white half either”
  • “Where is the KKK When you need them?”
  • “The zoo in Washington has an African Lion. The White House has a Lying African.”
  • “Caitlin Jenner needs to give his balls to Obama. Jenner doesn’t want his and Obama ain’t got none?”
  • “Colin Kaeperni*ger you overpaid Half Breed Take your millions and go back to Africa.”
  • Another sign had a depiction of a noose hanging from a tree and next to it the words “Obama Swing Set.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
