(ANAHEIM, CA, 10/5/16) – The Greater Los Angeles Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today condemned an apparently bias-motivated attack on a Sikh man in Bakersfield, Calif.
Balmeet Singh was reportedly attacked Friday night while standing in front of the Habit Burger talking on his phone when another man began shouting racial slurs and threw a cup of soda at the victim.
The attacker allegedly shouted: “You're trying to blow up this country, I should (expletive) kill you right now, you know, I'm gonna kill you right now you're trying to blow up the country.”
“We condemn this apparently bias-motivated attack and urge law enforcement authorities to bring the perpetrator to justice,†said CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush. “Californians of all faiths and backgrounds must stand together in the face of growing hatred and division in our state and nation.â€
Ayloush noted that CAIR has repeatedly condemned attacks on and discrimination against American Sikhs, who are often targeted by bigots who mistake them for Muslims because Sikh men wear beards and turbans as part of their faith.
The Washington-based civil rights and advocacy organization urges community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at:Â http://www.cair.com/civil-rights/report
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
