CAIR-MI Renews Call for Transparency in Fatal Shooting of Imam

(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 5/19/10) — The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today renewed calls for transparency by local, state and federal law enforcement entities in the investigation of the fatal shooting of a Muslim cleric last year in Dearborn, Mich.
CAIR-MI filed a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with law enforcement entities requesting information relating to a series of raids conducted by a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement task force on October 28, 2009. The raids resulted in the fatal shooting of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah by FBI agents.
All FOIA requests, including requests for the necropsy report of the FBI dog killed during the raid and video surveillance footage of the location of Abdullah’s death, have been denied.

A coalition of religious and civil rights leaders recently wrote to President Barack Obama requesting him to direct US Attorney General Eric Holder to launch a robust civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of Abdullah.

“We ardently renew our calls to local, state, and federal law enforcement entities to release video surveillance footage of the fatal shooting of Imam Abdullah,” said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Lena Masri. “The questionable circumstances surrounding the shooting as well as the undue suppression of evidence necessitates a rigorous investigation by the US Department of Justice.”
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
