CAIR-MI Welcomes Charges for Neo-Nazi Vandalism in Sterling Heights

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the filing of charges against two individuals accused of spray-painting Nazi swastikas and neo-Nazi phrases in multiple locations in Sterling Heights.

According to local reports, the suspects allegedly spray-painted the swastikas, the number 88 (neo-Nazi shorthand for “Heil Hitler”), “National Socialism is the way,” and “HEIL,” on a fence.

In a statement, CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid said:

“We welcome the filing of charges in this case and commend law enforcement for taking these disturbing incidents seriously. Hate crimes and the promotion of hate-filled ideologies must be met with accountability to send a clear message that bigotry and intimidation have no place in our communities.”

Earlier this month, CAIR-MI welcomed the filing of a hate crime charge against a man accused of directing a racist tirade targeting a Black woman last month at an Aldi in Cascade Township.

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

Last week, CAIR-MI condemned the reported racist vandalism of a biracial couple’s home in Brown City.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
