(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 8/5/18) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), today called on law enforcement authorities in that state to investigate vandalism targeting a Maplewood, Minn., mosque as a hate crime.
Two suspects are reportedly shown in surveillance video spray-painting “666,” “Jesus saves,” a cross, and obscenities on a wall of Alsalam Mosque on July 29. (NOTE: In popular culture, “666” is often associated with references to the anti-Christ or the devil.]

“Given the nature of the vandalism and the empowerment of Islamophobia nationwide by some of our nation’s top officials, we urge law enforcement authorities to treat this vandalism as a possible hate crime,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein.
The Washington-based Muslim civil rights organization has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
Earlier today, CAIR applauded the Idaho Republic Party for publicly repudiating an anti-Muslim slur used by a GOP candidate in that state.
