CAIR: Muslim Group Invites Virginia GOP Leader to Ramadan Iftar After Controversy Over Islamophobic Posts

CAIR logo(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/30/16) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today invited a member of Virginia’s Republican State Central Committee to take part in a Ramadan “iftar,†or fast-breaking meal, with that state’s Muslim community following a controversy in which the GOP leader was forced to apologize for posting anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric on Twitter and Facebook.

Fredy Burgos, a supporter of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, called Islam a “death cult organized by Satan,†compared Muslims to Nazis and said “immigration control from Islamic countries is a must.†Burgos later deleted those and other posts and apologized.

“Our research and experience show that Islamophobia is most often the product of lack of knowledge about Islam and Muslims and the absence of interaction with ordinary members of the Muslim community,†said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We invite Mr. Burgos to share a Ramadan fast-breaking meal with Virginia Muslims at his convenience any time in the remaining days of the holy month.â€

McCaw said the Muslim community in America will celebrate the end of the month-long Ramadan fast with communal prayers around the country on July 6.
