CAIR-NY Applauds Addition of Muslim Holidays to NYC School Calendar

CAIR-logo(NEW YORK, N.Y., 3/4/15) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today applauded an announcement by Mayor Bill de Blasio that New York public schools will observe Muslim holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which fulfills a campaign pledge made by the mayor.

“After years of advocating by New York City's Muslim community, Muslim public school students will finally and thankfully no longer be penalized for observing their religious holidays,†said CAIR Board Member Zead Ramadan. “We applaud Mayor de Blasio's announcement adding Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to the school calendar and will continue to engage with city government to advocate for Muslim civil rights.â€Â 

He noted that CAIR chapters nationwide have worked to have school districts recognize Muslim holidays.

CAIR: Maryland School Board Adds Muslim Holiday to Calendar

CAIR offers a booklet, called “An Educator's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.
